“Why can’t we all just get along?” *

Sometimes, it can take something small, an ill-considered comment or action, to erode the trust we have built between each other; as a result, our relationships can become strained and, sometimes, irretrievably broken.

Why can’t we just get along?

Conflict between individuals, including friends or family members, or work colleagues, can be extremely costly:

“60% - 80% of all difficulties in organisations come from strained relationships…,” Daniel Dana writing in Managing differences: How to build better relationships at work and home.

Unaddressed differences and disagreements lead to relationship strain. Without resolution, these tensions lead to a loss of trust and impact on our ability to communicate with each other.

Getting back to positive relationships

We can rebuild our relationships by focusing on:

Trust

Mutual trust is the foundation of all positive relationships. When we trust each other, we can be open and honest in our thoughts and actions.

Openness

Open and honest communication enables us to better understand each other and to address challenges before they lead to conflict.

Respect

People who respect each other value each other’s personalities, traits and opinions. This foundation can be vital when supporting each other through difficult times.

* The quote comes from the 1996 movie Mars Attacks! and the words are spoken by President James Dale (Jack Nicholson) as he addresses the marauding Martians in a plea to “work together”. Moments after the President finishes his impassioned speech; the aliens dispatch him but, it’s the thought that counts!
