What is EAP

What Is an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)?

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a 24/7, confidential, employer-funded mental health and wellbeing program. It provides employees with professional support at no cost to them. Immediate family members may also be able to access support, depending on the organisation’s EAP program.

EAP supports employees with personal and workplace challenges that can affect their mental health, wellbeing and performance. Work and life are closely connected, so providing support when employees need it can help them stay well, engaged and productive.

For employers, an effective EAP can also support a healthier workplace, improve employee wellbeing and contribute to better organisational outcomes.

  • Employee Assistance Programs are completely confidential, easily accessible, and free to use for employees.
  • Provides short-term, evidence-based, effective mental health care.
  • In the case of Converge, we see mental health as more than just counselling. We cover the whole wellbeing spectrum.
  • Our workplace wellbeing program supports a broad range of personal, emotional and work-related challenges that can affect an employee’s psychological wellbeing.

Six ways to access support

How Employees Can Access EAP Support

EAP can support psychosocial risk prevention by giving employees and managers early access to confidential support, while helping organisations strengthen workplace mental health and safety practices.

The Support Employees Can Access Through EAP

Employee Assistance Programs are designed to provide key support, counselling and coaching for employee mental health and wellbeing. This includes times when something feels off or when an employee reaches crisis point.

Wellbeing support can also help prevent challenges from escalating into a crisis. If an employee does reach crisis point, EAP support is available 24/7, offering crisis counselling and critical incident support after traumatic events.

EAP can support challenges including stress, anxiety, depression and burnout. It can also help employees with grief, workplace conflict, career concerns, neurodiversity, sleep, nutrition, workplace change, work-life balance and confidence.

Support Across the Wellbeing Journey

  • Everyday work and life challenges: EAP support can help employees with mental health, sleep, grief and loss, caring responsibilities and parenting. It can also support major life changes, motivation, work-life balance and general wellbeing.
  • Support at every stage: Employees can access proactive wellbeing support, early intervention, counselling and crisis support, without needing to wait until challenges escalate.
  • Support for family members: Depending on your wellbeing program, immediate family members may also access confidential counselling and wellbeing support.
  • Manager and leader support: Managers can receive confidential guidance for employee wellbeing concerns, difficult conversations, workplace conflict, performance issues and organisational change.
  • Flexible access: Support can be delivered face-to-face, by phone or virtually, supporting on-site, remote and hybrid employees.
  • Confidential support: Employees can independently access confidential EAP counselling for personal and workplace concerns, subject to standard legal and safety exceptions.
  • Qualified wellbeing professionals: Employees can access qualified clinicians, counsellors, psychologists, coaches and other relevant specialists.
  • Early intervention: Employees do not need a diagnosis, referral or to be in a crisis to seek support.
