It’s important to consider psychological safety when appointing Peer Support Officers
Identifying and selecting the right employees for the peer supporter role
The role of a Peer Support Officer is to assist colleagues through listening, understanding, and providing support during and after times of professional and personal distress. The role can be demanding and can include promoting the safety, stability, and wellbeing of vulnerable people.
Selecting the right employees for this role is therefore crucial to ensure the psychological safety of the Officer as well as the people with whom they work.
Our two peer support assessments
We have two assessment tools that are ideal for understanding the resilience, adaptability and interpersonal style of your Peer Support Officers:
- Applicant Suitability Matrix (ASM) – this assessment is ideal for an general understanding of how a Peer Support Officer will interact with their colleagues, particularly when they are feeling vulnerable, and how they will maintain a general level of resilience in their role.
- Risk Prediction Index (RPI) – this assessment is ideal for when the Peer Support Officer may be dealing with very challenging issues as part of their role and there is a key focus on maintaining their psychological safety.
Ongoing support
Information generated from the ASM or RPI will form a valuable component to the selection of your Peer Support Officers. Converge can provide support around the support to develop the EOI, as well as participating in the interview and selection of peers.
- Peer Support Training: Comprehensive training across six modules to equip peer supporters with the necessary skills.
- Ongoing Support through Professional Supervision: Continuous support and supervision to maintain effectiveness and wellbeing.
- Reporting: Systematic reporting to track progress and address any emerging issues.
